LIGHTING KNOWLEDGE
Lighting is not solely concerned with luminosity; it is also about comprehending the technology that underpins it. At Panova Lighting, we are of the opinion that a consumer who is well-informed makes a more informed decision. Consequently, we have established this knowledge section to impart essential illumination terms, concepts, and facts in a straightforward manner.
This page will assist you in comprehending illumination in a manner that is appropriate for you, regardless of whether you are a homeowner, architect, dealer, or project buyer.

Lighting Basics & Technical Terms
CRI (Colour Rendering Index)
The colour rendering index (CRI) indicates the degree to which a light faithfully depicts the actual colour of an object. Colours that appear natural and sharp are ideal for residences, retail, salons, and showrooms, as they have a high CRI (80 or higher).
CCT (Correlated Colour Temperature)
CCT decides whether your light will be warm yellow, neutral white, or cool white.
- 2700K–3000K = Warm White ( ww)
- 4000K = Neutral White ( nw )
- 6000K–6500K = Cool White ( wh )
At Panova, many lights come with 3-in-1 colour options, so you can switch between all 3 using a toggle.
Kelvins
The unit of measurement for CCT is Kelvin (K). Warmer (yellowish) temperatures are associated with lower Kelvin. Cooler (white/blueish) is the result of a higher Kelvin temperature. Uncomplicated principle: A low K value indicates a relaxed state of mind. A high K value indicates an active disposition.
WATT VS LUMEN
Wattage represents the amount of energy consumed. Brightness output is represented by the term “lumen.”
A higher wattage does not necessarily equate to increased luminosity. A inexpensive 18W light may not be as bright as a well-designed 12W light with a suitable reflector or lens.
IP Ratings
IP stands for Ingress Protection. It demonstrates the degree of waterproofness and dustproofness of a light.
- IP20 is intended for interior use.
- Splash-proof: IP44
- IP65 indicates that the area is resistant to intense rainfall.
It is completely waterproof and can be used in outdoor flooring, ponds, and gardens (IP68).
Beam Angle
The light’s dispersal is determined by the beam angle.
- 24° = narrow, focused (like spotlights)
- 36° = medium focus
- 60°+ = wide (for general lighting)
COB vs SMD
Chip-on-Board (COB) is a single, powerful illumination source. Sharp, premium, and focused. Utilised in surface cylinders, tracks, and COB spotlights.
Surface-Mounted Diode (SMD) is a term that refers to a collection of small semiconductors. Broader, softer. Utilised in rope lamps, strips, and panels.
Both are potent; however, they were designed for distinct purposes.
PVC vs Aluminium Body
PVC is a cost-effective and fundamental heat transfer material.
Aluminium provides superior cooling, a longer lifespan, and a superior finish.
At Panova, all premium lights are constructed with aluminium to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal.
External vs Inbuilt Driver
The driver is the soul of the light. It safeguards the device and regulates power.
External actuators are more easily replaceable and provide superior heat dissipation.
Inbuilt components provide a compact appearance, but they are more difficult to maintain.
If the quality is satisfactory, both are acceptable.
LED Lighting – Key Benefits
LEDs are the most intelligent illumination option available today. The reason for this is as follows:
Energy savings of up to 80% Absence of UV radiation and heat
Extended lifespan (20,000 hours or more) No flickering, instantaneous activation Designs that are both compact and tidy Smart control options and dimming
Safe for children, retail, offices, and residences
The transition to LED lighting is not only prudent; it is the new industry standard.
How Lighting Affects Your Mind & Mood

Lighting is not solely concerned with visibility; it also has an immediate impact on the chemicals in your brain.
White Light (6500K): Boosts serotonin levels, which maintains alertness, focus, and energy. This is the reason it is employed in kitchens, offices, retail counters, and workstations.
Melatonin is stimulated by warm white light (3000K), which aids in relaxation and rejuvenation. This is evident in restaurants, living areas, bedrooms, and cafés.
Neutral White (4000K):
A balanced effect is achieved by avoiding excessive stimulation or relaxation. Ideal for common areas, salons, and showrooms.
Poor illumination can result in:
Migraines
Poor sleep Eye tension Insufficient vitality
This is the reason why interior designers combine illumination layers: white in work zones and warm in chill zones.
For instance, in a restaurant, the kitchen is described as “cool white” and operates at a rapid tempo. Dining: subdued, warm white light (to create a tranquil atmosphere)
Panova provides a variety of products with three-in-one colour options, allowing you to easily swap between tones at any time.
Strip Light vs Rope Light

Both are flexible LED solutions — but used differently:
Feature Strip Light Rope Light
Shape Flat, sleek Round or square
Look Hidden, clean glow 360° glowing tube
Use Indoor: coves, wardrobes, stairs Outdoor: walls, gardens, facades Protection Mostly IP20–IP65 Usually IP65–IP68
Cut & Join Easily cut and extended Needs more planning
Panova offers both strip and rope lights in multiple wattages, colour temperatures, and protection grades.
How to Read a Light Box (Mini Guide)
Next time you buy lights, check these details on the box or catalogue:
- Wattage – Power consumption
- Lumens – Brightness level
- CCT/Kelvin – Colour tone (Warm/White)
- CRI – Colour accuracy (80+ is good)
- IP Rating – Waterproof or indoor use
- Driver Info – External or inbuilt
- Warranty – 2 Years at Panova
- Body Type – Aluminium or plastic
- Beam Angle – Spread of light
- Size & Cutout – For fitting in ceiling
Lighting is a combination of science, art, and intelligent decisions. At Panova, we facilitate the process for you by providing products that are pre-engineered to perform optimally, appear visually appealing, and fulfil their promises.
